Long before children can write neat sentences or solve sums, they are already expressing themselves through colour, sound, and texture. Art, music, and craft are not "extra" activities tucked in between lessons — they are some of the most powerful tools for early development. At The Learning Tree School, creative expression is woven into our daily routine because we've seen, year after year, how much it helps children grow.

Building fine motor skills

Holding a crayon, tearing paper, using safety scissors, rolling clay, or threading beads — each of these small movements strengthens the tiny muscles in a child's hands and fingers. This is the same fine motor control children will later need to hold a pencil and write with confidence.

Encouraging self-expression and confidence

Young children don't always have the vocabulary to describe how they feel — but they can paint it, draw it, or act it out. Art gives children a safe outlet to express emotions, and there is no "wrong" way to do it. Seeing their own creation proudly displayed builds real self-esteem and a sense of achievement.

Every splash of colour and every off-key song is a child practising confidence, one creative choice at a time.

Developing listening and language through music

Rhymes, songs, and simple instruments do more than entertain — they build listening skills, rhythm, memory, and vocabulary. Repeating song lyrics helps children recognise sounds and patterns in language, an important early step toward reading readiness.

Teaching patience, focus, and problem-solving

  • Completing a craft project teaches children to follow steps and see a task through to the end.
  • Choosing colours, shapes, and materials builds early decision-making skills.
  • Group art and music activities encourage children to take turns, share materials, and collaborate.
  • Exploring "what happens if I mix these colours" nurtures curiosity and experimentation.

How we bring creativity into the classroom

From finger painting and collage-making to rhyme time and simple percussion instruments, our teachers design creative sessions that are open-ended and joyful — there's no "correct" outcome, only exploration. This is where confidence, imagination, and a lifelong love of creativity begin to take root.
